SS Baku Standard
17 May 2010
In beautiful flat, shimmery calm conditions yesterday we returned to the wreck of the WW I tanker Baku Standard torpedoed 5 miles offshore from Gourdon. In comparison to the 3m underwater visibility we experienced on her 4 weeks ago, this time we were blessed with 15m ambiant visibility down on the wreck 200 feet beneath the surface - no torches required.
We managed to get round the whole of this 330 foot long tanker, looking into the Pump Room, Boiler & Engine Rooms, the Bridge and taking in the large stern DEMS gun still standing defiantly proud after more than 90 years on the seabed.
On the ascent when I was 15 metres above the wreck I could look down and see almost 100 feet of the wreck laid out beneath me. Looking up I could see the surface glinting and shimmering in the sun 100 feet above me. Stunning day out on the water - as good as it gets.

Hi
I was wondering if you have any pictures of the wreck, as a distant relative of mine, lost there life in the sinking of the SS Baku Standard on the 18th of February 1918.
Many Thanks
Paul
