Scapa Flow
20 October 2009
Just back after trip up to Scapa Flow aboard the Radiant Queen. The rate of decay of the German Fleet wrecks there seems to be accelerating. The light cruiser Brummer which lies on its starboard side has seen a huge change this year alone. The forward main gun fell from its foredeck mount a few years ago wrecking part of the decking as it went. This has led to the collapse this year of the bridge superstructure immediately behind it - perhaps one of the most photogenic sights in the Flow. The foredeck has peeled off as far as the anchor capstans and now lies fallen over the 5.9 inch gun turret on the seabed below.
As we prepared to dive the battleship Markgraf on Friday, the body of a diver who was lost inside the adjacent battleship Konig, a year or two ago was found inside her remains.
