I've had a quiet few months. I finished editing my book and have since been getting my resolve back up to start a new one. I've been reading lots. I don't normally get through many novels when I'm writing because I worry that other voices might creep into my own work so now I'm trying to catch up. I've read some John Updike, Neil Gaiman (the Sandman comics are sublime. I've been reading them for 2 1/2 years now because "graphic novels" are so expensive to buy), John Steinbeck. I also read Audrey Niffeneggar's new book, Her Fearful Symmetry. I loved it. One reviewer questioned the likeability of the ghost in the book - since when have ghosts been nice?!? They're supposed to be scary you moron. I HAVE to go to Highgate Cemetery.
My next book (my third book that is) is probably going to have a climate change theme and I've been reading lots about that. Scary stuff. Two great introductory books (if you're looking) are The Weather-Makers by Tim Flannery and Global Warming: A Short Introduction by Mark Maslin. To read about the extinction of the tiny Golden Toad that lived in the cloud forests of Costa Rica is truly heart-breaking.
So it looks as though my second novel will be coming out in July. On The Third Day is a story about... lots of things, really. I'll wait for the publishers to do the blurb before I try to describe it because they're far better at summarising than I am. One thing I can guarantee is that the reader is going to get value for money - it is long! The copy-editing will be along soon and I can't wait to see what cover the designers come up with. This part of the process, the publishing side, the collaborative side, is great. It's good when other people get involved. Don't get me wrong, I really love the raw writing but it is nice to have the book-making itself to look forward to at the end. Okay I'm done for now.

Hopefully the cover for On The Third Day will be as good as The Suicide Club was...
