His first name's Mitchell but family and friends all call him Mitch

He's been married to Penny for more than 25 years.

They have two sons: Jack (22) and Charlie (20)

They live in a thatched house by the sea in West Sussex.

His hobbies include playing guitar, swimming, travelling, playing table-tennis and (of course!) reading.

 

His favourite country in the world (apart from Britain!) is New Zealand.

 

When he worked at BBC TV in the early 1980s, he was the youngest director ever.

 

He hates offal (liver, kidneys etc.) and also peas.

Despite all the books and awards, he says "My greatest achievement – by far – is to have co-parented two fantastic sons"

Mitch says, "Even though my mother is a talented artist who has had work exhibited in the Royal Academy, I can’t draw to save my life"

He once posed as a male model for an investigative documentary. "Fortunately, it was for radio. Also, I was three stones lighter"
