A poetic tribute to the Slow Train

Philip Larkin reads his work The Whitsun Weddings, possibly the most evocative poem ever about a journey on a slow train, written in 1957. Larkin, reckoned by many to be Britain's greatest postwar poet, travelled on a train from Hull, where he was the university's chief  librarian. The stops out of the Yorkshire city, as he travelled towards London on that sultry summer's afternoon, were Doncaster, Retford, Grantham, Newark and Peterborough.  A perfect period piece...
