World Book Day meets the iPad

Just taken my children along to brilliant World Book Day event at my local bookshop. But this is also the week in which Apple launched its upgraded new version of the iPad - the electronic challenger to the printed word. I feel ambivalent. As a Random House author I am dedicated to books and sit here writing this in my study surrounded by them. But in my other life I teach new media in Britain's biggest academic communications school. This week a team of my clever University of Central Lancashire students won the BBC's prestigious Innovation Award, presented by Victoria Wood. How many print products will they be reading in ten years' time, I wonder...

I think eBooks have their place (on a train, plane, subway, in line waiting for coffee) but when I'm home, snuggling on the couch with a book, I want a real, printed book. That, I hope, will never change. So I figure I'll always have an eBook and a print book going at the same time.
