To Kindle or not to Kindle?
13 January 2011
In my "other life" I am a senior lecturer in the School of Journalism, Media and Communication at Uclan - Britain's biggest journalism school, where I specialise in new media. I am often asked about the relative virtues of reading books on Kindle, the iPad, the iPhone or other new media devices. More people than ever have been inquiring since Christmas, when many were fortunate enough to get them as presents. My verdict is that there is no definitive answer as yet - although I am obviously delighted to see a Kindle statement on my author royalties! I find the screen on my iPhone too small, on the iPad too glossy and refective. The Kindle is tempting, particularly in its reading quality. It was a delight when I was able recently to download the latest New York Times recommendations when I was away in a remote part of the United States, hundreds of miles from a bookshop. But now I am at home, near a brilliant independent bookseller, I've gone back to that delicious feel of paper. My advice: hold fire!
