The best 'slow train' in Britain?

17 November 2011

Class 67 No. 67015 arrives at Birmingham Moor Street

I've just tried out Chiltern Railways' new train service from London Marylebone to Birmingham, using classic diesel locomotives and vintage carriages with comfy seats which reflect a golden age of comfort. In fact, just like the railways used to be before "lowest common denominator" became the mantra! Actually with a 90-minute journey the new service is not much slower than the rival Virgin Trains from Euston. Thank goodness they didn't convert this delightful line into a busway as was once the plan in the Beeching years...
