Station with sweet name back on the map
21 May 2010
Travelled this week on inaugural train from Kings Cross to Bradford, linking six West Riding towns and cities to London on the first regular service for many of them for over 30 years. I was with Yvette Cooper, MP for Pontefract, who was my former colleague at the Independent. It was the first train from the capital to her station at Pontefract Monkhill (appropriately sweet name for the home of delicious Pontefract Cakes!) since 1863. Forget the cuts and rejoice in small train companies such as Grand Central, who are bringing proper train services back to the regions where routes were devasted by Beeching.
