Slow trains, fast trains
17 March 2011
With my two new Random House volumes due for publication in the first week in April, I'm busy doing interviews with the BBC and other national media. I'm being asked lots of questions about On the Slow Train, which comes out in an updated paperback edition from Arrow, and On the Slow Train Again, my new book from Preface. You might think, because of the titles of my books, I would be against the government's plans for a multi-billion pound new high-speed line from London to Birmingham. I'm not! How marvellous that Britain should be part of the international high-speed rail club at last. But there is a nagging doubt. Would it not be better to sprinkle the money over our existing overcrowded and underfunded network?
