On the Slow Train to Georgia
29 August 2011
You may think that the US is a barren zone for slow train travel along branch lines and into the hinterland of railway history. But I've just been taking the course of the old South Carolina Railroad.from Savannah in Georgia to Charleston along the coast. It was in Charleston that 'Best Friend' - America's first successful steam loco - ran, pulling carriages in 1830, the year of the much more celebrated 'Rocket' from Liverpool to Manchester. And, yes, you can stil buy a tickel to Charleston station, via Amtrak, America's national rail system...
Have your say
