On the Slow Train, fast rising rail fares - and the spectre of Beeching?

Britain's train fares are about to go through the roof, although the government has tried to sweeten the pill by announcing an investment in new carriages on urban commuter routes around London and Manchester. What about the less high-profile, but no less important stopping trains of Britain? We must be thankful there will be not be another Beeching. but in some parts of the country local authority cuts are taking their toll on support for country railway lines. We need to be vigilant, otherwise some of the nation's most beautiful rail lines will wither...
