On the Slow Train Again on the BBC
02 April 2011
This week, to coincide with the publication of my new book On the Slow Train Again, I'm doing a round of broadcasts and interviews with BBC local radio stations. I'm ranging round the entire country from Radio Shropshire, Radio Devon, Radio Newcastle, Radio Tees, Radio Humberside, Radio Northampton and many others including BBC Radio Scotland Live and BBC Radio Wales Live. Listen out on Friday. I love BBC local radio. Like regional railways, local radio is an institution at the heart of community life, and in my day job at the School of Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire, I help train young journalists who go on to establish top media careers with experience there. But now local radio is under threat from BBC economies. It would be a tragedy if the proposed cuts to daytime broadcasting went ahead and it would be another nail in the coffin of British regional life.
