After the famous role of Britain's front line forces, there were probably few greater achievements during World War 2 than that of transport workers on the home front. My new book, from Preface Publishing, will celebrate the role of these unsung heroes and heroines. The troop trains in the blackout, the delivery of food and armaments, sheltering Londoners in the Blitz on the Tube. Anyone who has seen David Lean's iconic film 'Brief Encounter' will be aware of the drama of the story. I'm spending the next few months travelling around the country hearing tales from the last living participants. But a shock close to home. Just found out that for 20 years, there was an undetonated incendiary bomb under our own family front steps, destined to blast the goods trains in the freight yards at King's Cross just down the road...
