God's Wonderful Railway...
28 September 2010
At the weekend I joined the celebrations for the 175th anniversary of 'God's Wonderful Railway', otherwise known as the Great Western Railway. First Great Western, the train company that now runs Brunel's great enterprise, chose, not a corporate bash, but to return a steam train to the the Liskeard to Looe branch in Cornwall for the first time in 50 years. The Looe Valley line is a gem in the firmament of the most beautiful branch lines in the world, and there were tears in the eyes of those who watched the early autumn sun glinting off the copper-capped chimney of a green pannier tank heading a rake of chocloate and cream coaches up the valley. Read more about it in my new book 'On the Slow Train Again', out next spring...
