Elegy for slow trains and local newspapers

There's a Beeching-style cull going in in the local press at the moment, which is a bit like what happened to the railways in the 1960s, where the heart was ripped out of local communities. I just returned from a promotional tour of the West Country for my new book On the Slow Train Again and I must say how marvellous the surviving local papers are. Well done, the Crediton Country Courier and North Devon Journal. You fly the flag for the best of journalism...
