24 Hour Reading for World Peace Day

19 September 2010

I'm very happy to be reading in an online event for World Peace Day on Tuesday (21st Sept.) at 9.15am. 80 authors from around the world are involved in this 24 hour continuous reading to celebrate and publicise Peace Day. This is also a Guinness World Record Attempt. Details of the day and the readers are at http://www.authorsforpeace.com/index.html and the link to the event will be posted there from tomorrow. Do log in and support us if you can, and/or pass on this link to anyone interested in either literature or peace, or both! Thankyou for any support you can give to the day.

Commonwealth Short Story Awards

25 October 2009

A short storyof mine, called 'Hiding in the Cracks,' has received a 'highly commended' award in the competition. Having heard the other chosen stories I feel very proud to have one of mine feature among them. The CD of the stories, 'Voices from Our World' will be distributed to broadcasters all over the Commonwealth so there is also the tremendous thrill of imagining someone on the other side of the world hearing the story. If anyone should happen across it I would love to know what you think.

The Great Fiction Workshop

04 September 2009

The weather should be pleasant, the scenery will be beautiful, the wine and conversation will flow  - what more could a group of writers need for inspiration? I'm delighted to have  the opportunity to team teach on a week-long fiction workshop in Mallorca with Barbara Large, MBE, Director of the Winchester Writers' Conference. The course will run from 24th-30th October; click on 24th Oct on the events calendar on my authorsplace page for details or check out  http://www.centromallorca.com/index.asp
Anyone out there fancy tackling their novel in the company of like-minded individuals?

Walking for ideas.

21 June 2009

At the Manchester Book Festival, a creative writing student asked me for a tip on how to get ideas. He looked a bit surprised when I said, 'Walk'.  Today, walking through the valley near my home and looking out over pasture and fields of spring barley, the magic happened again - always a surprise and a blessing. I don't know whether it's the regularity of your footfall or the way your mind clears when you get out into the open but somehow walking opens a space and, often, abhorring a vacuum, the imagination fills it. I'd be interested to know if other people find this too? Or under what circumstances you find your ideas arrive?
